BMW announces today a ruled out third Hypercar entry at Le Mans. Team WRT which runs the factory BMW program in both IMSA and WEC who already fields two cars in each series states a third entry just is not likely. It all comes down to the cost to bring an extra car to Le Mans a whole infrastructure is needed for Le Mans. The budget for Le Mans is just two high not only entry fees but bringing the extra car, mechanic, pit boxes etc is just not cost effective. Also with this being the first year of WRT in IMSA they are focusing on developing and learning to the new program they are taking part in. With BMW not planning on fielding an extra car and the now Porsche 963 being ineligible due to not running in WEC. The Hypercar grid will likely only see one new additional entry for 2026 being a third entry from Wayne Taylor Racing with the Cadillac VSeriesR. At 18 cars it would mark the smallest Hypercar grid since its inception in 2023. The grid however is expected to swell past 20 again as soon as next year with launch of Hypercar programs Ford and McLaren next year.
