Fabian Schiller tops qualifying at the Nurburgring aboard his number 80 WinWard Racing Mercedes AMG. Schiller reeled off a 8:14.957 lap time in the final 30 minutes of the two hour qualifying 1 session. The German’s lap time was 3.112 seconds quicker than the Rowe Racing BMW of Raffaele Marciello who made a late improvement despite arrival of rain. At one point WinWard Racing was 1-2 with Max Verstappen’s lap time of a 8:18.539 at the top of the timesheets in the opening hour of the session under dry conditions. Verstappen did however get relegated down to third position due to the 99 Rose BMW of Dan Harper and the 911 Manthey Racing Porsche of Thomas Preining completing the top 5. In the final 20 minutes of the session the rain intensified seeing teams making the move to rain tires. There were a few notable incidents that took place in this first two hour session. On the Grand Prix circuit Alexander Hardt bailed from his burning Porsche Cup Car moments before Janina Schall ran into his car almost hitting Hardt. The most notable SP9 car involved in incident was the number 24 LionSpeed Porsche. Ricardo Feller was behind the wheel when he crashed at Metzgesfeld and Kallenhard. Feller reported he hit a wet patch in the early moments of the session. Qualifying 2 is up next which will offer drivers a chance at night time running.
